Re: last ditch effort

2) The oil seals on the pushrods in the block, they are all at somewhat different heights stickin out of the block, is that correct?

If you are talking about the lifters...........I think you're in over your head.

1. you may have been flooding it trying to get it going.
2. Those are your lifters.;)
3. You could try turning the engine over and see if the valves open and close. Watch the lifters, pushrods and the rockers see if you notice anthing unusual.

Re: last ditch effort

What I am talking about is when you take the intake manifold off, the pushrods pass through round looking things with clips in them that are in the block.

If those are the lifters, then it is correct that they are all at different heights.

Also, like I said, the stud on the one cylinder is much higher than the others, is this meaning the valve clearance is off.

I am just trying to figure out if I should just go ahead and take the head off?

Thanks!!!

Re: last ditch effort

Do you mean the stud with the nut holding the rocker? If so, the stud may have puuled out. credit to Just jason for saying that a few posts back.

Re: last ditch effort

If the rocker stud was pulled, would that not mean that the valve wouldn't open?

His leak down test showed that air was going from the cylinder into the exhaust, which would point to the exhaust valve not closing.

Before you take your head off, you have to take your valve-train apart anyway.

At this point, with your intake manifold off and your valve cover off, I would start taking your rockers and push-rods out, so you can get a better look at the top of the valves.

Label each push rod and each rocker, so you know where they go back.
After you've got all the parts out, inspect everything. Look for anything different about that dead cylinder. Also, try the leakdown test again once the rockers and pushrods are out.

Re: last ditch effort

If the stud has pulled then just pull the head at this point. You need a new stud and need to have it pressed in at a competent machine shop.

As far as hearing air out the exhaust on the leakdown test.... loosen up the rocker by half a turn to start and recheck your compression. Bet it starts to come back the looser you go.

On a side note.... and don't take this the wrong way..... If you can't identify basic block components then you are definitely going to have a hard time understanding service manual procedures..... The manuals are written assuming the reader has gone through tech school or had formal training.

Re: last ditch effort

loosen /remove both rockers on the affected cylinder and retest. If the valve was stuck partially open and the pushrod didnt break trying to open the valve and pushed the rocker stud up some, may account for the leakage out the exaust.
