Here is my final project of the year - was in the barn for years and last time I got it out it popped a couple of times and actually ran for a second then nothing - probably need to dismantle the carb.

Anyone know anything about these? Do they have an impeller? What do you think the mix might be? Anyone know of a forum which deals with these?

I am kicking myself now as for some reason I took off the propeller and put it somewhere in the garage....can I find that darn thing now? Of course not.

Thank you,

Lee

Your motor is not a Johnson/Evinrude/Gale, but looks very similar to an air cooled Sears Elgin motor I had many years ago. It was a terrible motor, but at the time all I could afford. If I recall correctly, it was based on a Clinton powerhead and was truly awful to get started. Probably the worst motor I ever owned. Almost impossible to restart after running. I almost threw it overboard in 600' of water one time. Once running it was OK, but it wouldn't idle worth a damn.

You'll probably get more help in one of the other board sections.

Looks like a rebadged version of the West Bend "Shrimp" 3.5 hp model from the late 1950s/early 1960s. Also sold as an Elgin (Sears), yours was sold through Eaton's in Canada. All the same motor - just different paint & decals.

britch, your motor was built by West Bend / Chrysler / Force (all the same outfit, name changed over the years). It is not a Clinton, nor is it an Eska. It uses a West Bend (etc) powerhead, and does not have a water pump impeller. A ram tube aft of the propeller forces water up to cool the exhaust.

I would consider it one of the best of the air cooled outboards.

Tons of them were made for Sears, JC Penny, Eatons, and others.
