What was the last year that OMC produced either a 4 horsepower Johnson Seahorse or Evinrude twin-cylinder, 2-stroke, short-shaft outboard with the Tank-On-Top-Of-The-Motor style (model easily recognized as it had a breather cap at the top of the motor's plastic cover)? (Incidently, I'm in the market for one in very good running order as well as appearance!)

You need a model number. They quit using the self contained tank, then started using it again. Sounds like you have one of the newer ones.

Not mine that was an old iboats thread that popped up on google.
Pete_L maybe looking for an old one or the convenience of not having a tank in the boat. :)

Don't have a newer one... but would like to get a short shaft one...similar to the one referenced in the www.outboardrepairs.com website mentioned (it's a 1992 model w/tank-on-top-of-the-motor style). Did the newer ones have a reverse feature w/o having to physically move the outboard into the reverse position? I know that Johnson/Evinrude never incorporated an electronic start in smaller horsepower 2-strokes, right?

Just checked BRP parts.

for 1994
integral tanks models have forward and neutral.
external tank models have forward, neutral reverse

There were two models of the later 4 hps. The normal one just had neutral and forward. The one with the shifter and the external tank fitting was called the Deluxe model. A nice little motor...lightweight, reliable, and more powerful than you'd think. It's the 4 that thinks its a 5. :D
