I just bought a later model long shaft tiller Johnson 30hp that I'm trying to identify the year for. The ID plate on the transom bracket is long gone since the previous owner painted it, so I don't have the actual model number from which you could normally extract the date from easily. The lid has also been painted and decals removed, but it appears to have the Bombardier logos at the front and back. The lid may not be original to this outboard. The guy I bought it from claimed it was a 1998, but I'm not so sure since he was not the original owner.

The only ID I see is on the silver freeze plug: 5111663

The freeze plug appears to be original, and the powerhead looks to be in great shape. Is there any other way to identify the year? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Are you even sure it is a 30hp? My not-so-official list of serial numbers places it at 1981-ish.

I'll get some pictures of the power head tomorrow. It should be 1984 or newer because it has the through prop exhaust, right? The power head is black if that makes any difference. I'll have to check the carburetor tomorrow. It was sold as a 30hp, but I have no way to 100% confirm.

Actually, the thru-hub exhaust appeared on the 1976 35hp. However, the black powerhead does make it newer than that.
