Here's some pics of my latest project - a 1955 Johnson RD17E which is about ready for another 55 years. I still have to find an original dash plate and solenoid box, but she fires up fine with the wiring harness I've fabricated. Converted to 12 volts but other than that, all original. I even have the tank which originally came with the motor. I'm working on that right now. She's painted, and I'm waiting for new gaskets, hose and connector. I'll probably put original decals on the tank as well. A lot of work but, heh, I'm retired and my labor is cheap.:)

Actually AutoValue has a camera - they shoot the motor and mix the paint and put it in aerosol cans. Hard part is finding a 3"x3" spot on the motor that's not faded. Used the recoil starter on this one - usually under the hood you can find some good paint.

Actually, bought this from a guy who had it stored in his garage for years. Came complete with the tank, but no wiring. $50.

Man I wish we had AutoValue here, I go into the paint shop, they scan and then hand you a swatch board to pick the "closest" colour, they don't mix anything.

There used to be a place in Wisconson called Tower Paint. They would have you send a part and they ould color match it, mix the paint and put it in spray cans for you. Shortly thereafter, your original part and the paint would show up in the mail. Their prices were very reasonable and the service was great. Unfortunately, they seem to be out of business.

It great to know that someone else does this too. Is Autovalue a chain store? Will they do mail order business? Any info that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

BTW ... the motor is "sweet!"

Isn't mail order paint killer when it comes to shipping? You can't USPS or Canadapost spray so they require UPS. I'm going to Toronto next weekend just to go to the maple leaf AOMCI general meeting to save the $35 a can shipping price (and probably grab another motor :D)

Here's the website:

lookslike they're only in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin. Several stores in our area. Looks like they don't ship.

The MG is a split bumper 1970 model. All these old "toys" do keep me busy.:)

Nice deal. I bet he's proud of the work you've done too. I like the 55 models. It's the first year of the rubber shock mounts and a lot of other changes were made to simplify the motor as well.

I noticed that the MG is a GT, also. I always liked them much better than the roadsters. That said, my all time fav in sports cars of that era, was the Austin Healy 3000.

When I was about 15, a friend's older sister (in her 20s) had one. She was gorgeous and built like ... well .... a sexy sports car! That woman, in the Austin Healy, was quite a sight to see!

I had a 1960 AH 3000 and it was a great car. 6 cylinder with overdrive. Bought it in 1962 for $1400 and sold it 3 years later for $1400. Wish I still had it. I always liked the British sports cars of that era, and this is my 3rd MGB. Can't afford an Austin Healy anymore.
