Here we have my latest acquisition, picked up only about an hour ago. She is later than 1991 but I cant see the model number plate so I will find out for sure tomorrow.

She has two bad pistons with broken rings. She appears relatively clean so I will take the sellers word that the electronics are functioning and the power trim works. She is destined for my 21 foot cuddy---if I get a chance to work on her. I have too much SH**

AND Scott: Remember how I said some engines used the Merc style locking plate for the prop nut? Here's a photo for you.

Nice! so...... what did you give for her??? or is that like asking a lady her age LOL! and while i'm here, what would you guess a full rebuild on that would cost? I'm talking all five overbore and new piston kits etc..? Only reason is I have a similar opportunity that just arose, and want to make sure its worth it.

Well, five pistons will cost somewhere between 400-600 depending upon brand, where you buy them and if your machine shop can or will get you a discount. Boring will cost somewhere around 250. Gaskets--I don't know on the 5 cylinder but I'll bet a full gasket set including the head gasket would be around 60-100.

This particular engine broke the rings and it appears that I MIGHT be able to hone the two affected cylinders and replace those pistons. Time will tell.

Is a full rebuild worth it? A lot of times you can buy a running engine for the same or even less money so only you can decide.

In my case, the 4 cylinder 140 on a 21 foot cuddy just does not have enough balls at the hole shot so I have been looking halfheartedly for a while. My hope is that the extra 25 cubic inches will make a difference in both hole shot and top end. Since I have minimal money invested right now, I can always part it out and recoup the purchase price.

So, because this engine is destined for my cuddy, I may start with minimal repairs and if it performs as I hope then I may go and replace all 5 pistons.

Does this mean that we'll have to wait for the results of the triple on steroids?

Well, Here is the damage. Couple of nicks in the exhaust ports but over all, the cylinders will dress out with honing. Surprising with the amount of damage to the pistons. AND---I think I may have a couple of standard pistons. It might just be on the water this summer if I can ever finish renovations to my house. They are taking most of my time and money--read cubic money for a high end kitchen with stainless appliances. The woman needs it! And what the woman wants---the woman gets--or I don't get any. Oops---too much sharing. LOL

Looks like you found a good deal with this motor. Not much wrong with it for someone with your knowledge. I've been looking for a 5 cylinder to toy around with for a while now. I'm jealous. Always wanted to adapt a later model CDM ignition system on one like I did on my 1988 125HP. Unfortunately I gotta keep my wife's priorities in mind too! LOL!

Re: Latest toy

The only aftermarket pistons I know for this motor that is offered is Wiseco and Sierra.. If its the small bore model keep the rpms below 5000 as the cranks are known for breakage. Force tried to run these in the APBA races but most could not finish a race due to failures. It would have been a powerhouse if it had a better intake delivery system on it, 3 carbs feeding 5 cylinders...some engineer was smoking the good stuff. It will work pretty good in your application but its a thirsty motor...

Thanks, Fazt. It is indeed a big bore engine. I have in the past stayed away from the 5 cylinder engines because they just look "wrong" to me. But, I do seem to need the extra displacement. This particular engine appears to be modestly ported although the center web has been factory milled out on the exhaust side. I may just disassemble the whole thing and clean up the "flashing" they left. They only run the mill down the center and don't move it, leaving two points, top and bottom--sloppy.

The only problem with disassembly is that the gaskets are far more expensive than I anticipated--60 bucks for a head gasket and another 60 for the exhaust gasket.--OUCH!

I don't see a problem feeding five cylinders with three carbs as long as they were balanced in a proper manifold BUT-- I always wondered about feeding the single center cylinder with that massive TC carb. It is jetted differently than the other two and does appear to work though.

This particular engine was rebuilt at one time as only the top piston is .020 oversized

Re: Latest toy

If you need a gasket set for it pop me a PM, a complete gasket set for that motor would cost ya about $150 including shipping....
