lawn mower crankshaft

I started a little project the other day breaking down an old lawn mower engine (Briggs & Stratton) just to see how it ticks and with the intention of putting it back together again. I cannot get the bottom half of the crank case away from the crank shaft because of the big bulbous end where the mower blade bolted into. In order to free the crank shaft, it needs to slide through a rather small opening in that half of the case, and the big fat end won't go. I know this piece can come off, otherwise the engine could never be rebuilt. It looks like it was pressed on, and there may even be a key way. Anybody know how to remove this piece off the crank? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: lawn mower crankshaft

Does the blade flange have 1 bolt or three bolts to hold the blade/flange to the crank??

If one bolt, you will need a small two jaw puller. Put the bolt in the crank shaft but leave it loose by a couple of turns. the head will give the forcing screw something to work against. As the flange moves, back the crank bolt out some more. You many need a longer bolt to get the flange all the way off.

If it is a 3 bolt system you could make up your own pulling rig with a plate bolted to the flange by the two outside holes on the flange and over top of the bolt that goes into the crank. Thread the bolt all the way into the crank and install the plate over top of it then back the crank bolt out. That will force the flange off of the shaft. some oil or antiseize on the threads will help here.

It's not pressed on, it's just old and corroded. Try soaking it in some penetrating oil and heating it up, and hit it with a hammer and a block of wood.
