I am convinced it has nothing to do with health issues. It has to do with some people who just don't like it. Which is understandable, but I also have a list of actions that offend me. Hey, lets pass some laws.

This is the quandry, many people are like me and hate the smell of cigs smoldering in another's mouth. However, we also hate personal freedoms being eroded away. I disdain the laws that do that, but I am enjoying the results of "No Smoking." (I do think it is a bad law).

As for background checks for guns - don't mind that now that they are "instant". Go ahead and check - but if I am fit, don't keep a gun away from me! Time to get a new gun.

Make people pay for their own healthcare and they can smoke all they want.

There's a big misconception being repeated here. It's not so much the customers that are the main consideration. I mean so you're exposed to a little smoke on occcasion for an hour or less. Big deal. And of course most have smoking and non-smoking sections. I'm okay with that as a Customer. It's the Employees! The ones stuck in that environment 40/52.

That's over 2,000 hours each year exposed to known carcinogens that sane people would prefer not to be exposed to for one second. Do you avoid exposure to known carcinogens in your work place? Shouldn't they be able to too? I mean in any other situation, an employer could be held responsible for bringing a known carcinogen into the workplace and exposing the employees to it on a daily basis. Why should cigarette smoke have any different status? Especially given it's status as the #1 cause of many forms of cancer.

Rant over, back on topic.
The worst form of law is Big Brother law. Even worse when it's disguised by using a grossly misleading name ... like Patriot.

Willy, if that were the case then why are cigarettes legal? If they are as you state, then the government is clearly and intentionally putting the publics health at risk. Or perhaps, much like Global Warming, there is only a link, albeit indirect, regarding the cause and effect.

So if a sole business owner with no employees decides to allow smoking or his employees know the "risks" and choose to work there anyhow, or sign a waiver, or smoke themselves, or just don't care, you still feel comfortable removing peoples rights. Your arguement is the one used in California. Sure it has holes, but hey it worked there.

How about liquor? Known to cause illness, and when abused death. How about living in LA, its like smoking a pack a day. Any warnings on the city limit signs? "BREATHING THE AIR IN THIS CITY CAN BE HAZZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH". Denver is even worse. How about chlorinated water. Another known cancer agent? All laws must be applied equally.

Neat how we can divine which persons rights supercedes others.

The rights of the person who chooses to make good health decisions should supercede the rights of those who choose to make bad health decisions.....

Making you sign a waver, would be forcing you to assume risk........;)

Re: Laws I don't agree with etc.

Haut, life is a risk. I have to drive to Michigan, thats a risk. I am going to have a glass of water, thats a risk.

We choose risks everyday. Risks we don't have to take. This is a boating site, talk about risk. :% Watch the X-games on TV, now that is a risk. Any sport is a risk. Climbing frozen mountains not a risk?

As long as risks are known, or at least percieved, ones actions can be adjusted accordingly. I think going into the SF bath houses poses some risks. Guess what, I won't be going. Perhaps I have grounds for a lawsuit. 8)

I guess some risks are more PC than others. Heath risks as a measurment for rights, I got to look that one up!

When your risky behavior affects me, that is when the need for law prevails ....
With your arguement, the need for speed limits doesn't exist.....:)

How does my smoking a cig in a bar in Wisconsin affect you? But I do understand how rights can be inconvenient.

Re: Laws I don't agree with etc.

I find it interesting that early on in this thread, someone turned this into liberal laws they do not like and posted several while ignoring others.

"Pointer, those are freedoms and the socialists HATE those. Freedom of choice is not in their vocabulary, except for the "A" word which I won't use, then it's OK."

So let me get this straight Plainsman, so long as you agree with the law, it is fine by you. So, in the end, you are not complaining about "laws" in general, just the ones you disagree with. You complain of a lack of freedom of choice, but you are fine removing some of them. No hypocrisy there...I guess.

How about gay marriage laws, murder laws, drug laws.....no erosion of rights there either. Where were the slippery slopes when those laws were enacted? Some of you complain about the slippery slope.......but that slippery slope began the moment Moses came down Mt. Sinai holding the Ten Commandments. How many of you detest those? Hypocrisy is an absolute freedom of choice.

From now on, smokers have to wear my underwear on their head while smoking. Inside out.

Let me know if this next one is wide spread:

Dear Property Owner:

"As a result of an ordinance passed Nov. 14, 2006, the Code Enforcement Department is extending its annual property maintenance inspection program to cover all rental housing, including single family residences. In the past, only multi-family residences were part of this inspection program. The purpose of the inspection program is to prevent property depreciation by enforcing minimum standards of maintenance. It also benefits owners by ensuring that the property is checked on a regular basis, allowing smaller issues to be corrected before they grow into large, expensive problems."

I appreciate Big Brothers help, and at least he didn't mention that smoking, pets, sex, or Christmas is prohibited on the property thank-you very much8)

I also am grateful that the "town" will be of benefit in the current tanking real-estate market:} LOL

Can't wait for the first "inspection".
