I am waiting on SS's reply. I really like the looks of the X2Gen monitors.

(9749)

Re: LCD Monitor?

Spinner, in theory, LCD's will out perform CRT's by a bunch. But, because they are basically all semiconductors, there is no warning that they are gonna fail. A CRT looses brightness, colors fade, so you get an idea that it's about done.
I would not let that be a concern. I bought the wife a MAG almost three years ago and it looks the same today as when new.

An LCD will save your electric bill too!

Believe it or not, there's a reason some of the cheap LCD's are cheap... they use cheaper parts made in parts of the world where quality is not the primary objective.

Re: LCD Monitor?

I would not overlook the Westinghouse LCD monitors. When they came out last year the blow everything else out of the water for price/performance. But that 8+ months ago and technology changes fast, so who knows now?!?

http://www.westinghousedigital.com/c-3-lcd-monitors.aspx

Btw, you may want to consider connectivity to the LCD monitor you decide on. They can be used for more than just a computer display, often have several options for plugging stuff in.

Re: LCD Monitor?

Wow!!! What a big difference this is.
So much brighter and more plain.
Needs some adjustment to the brightness, but that is a just a thing.
What a difference this makes. It shocked me when I turned it on.

(9740)

Re: LCD Monitor?

The standard monitor cable is analog

The DVI Cable will only work if your video card has a DVI connector also.

If you have DVI connectors the cable will give better performance on the monitor

What is a DVI Connector

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. DVI is a multi-pin connection used for carrying high-definition video signals, found on HDTV tuners and HDTV-ready televisions, as well as some computer displays. The DVI standard for HDTV incorporates a form of copy protection known as HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).

There are actually two types of DVI connections. DVI-D, which is the type of DVI connection found on most home video gear, carries digital-only signals. DVI-I, used with some computer video cards, is capable of passing both digital and analog video signals. Some TVs feature DVI-I inputs for greater hookup flexibility.

I have another cable connection right next to the monitor signal connection that looks like the DVI cable. Is that where I would plug it into?

(9724)

Re: LCD Monitor?

You were told to consider the LCD’s connections BEFORE you purchased.

DVI is the predecessor to HDMI. It is a way of moving a digital signal. DVI comes in three primary flavors, I, A, and D, and each of those flavors comes in single and dual link, for a total of six different DVI possibilities to interconnect analog and/or digital video an/or audio. Many of the DVI sockets are compatible with HDMI if you use an adaptor. Without knowing what flavor of DVI your LCD panel is, and what flavor of DVI you are connecting it to, it is impossible to suggestion a course of action other than try it, you might get lucky.

DVI is the result of maxing out the possible bandwidth of a VGA connection. VGA is what computers typically use, looks very similar to DVI, but doesn’t have the wide blade off to one side.

DVI and HDMI have an ask/answer scheme built into the standard. VGA does not. It may or may not be implemented on any of your hardware. What happens is the sending unit (your computer) “asks” if the receiving unit (your LCD) is authorized to display the data, usually hi-def media content. If the LCD manf’r hasn’t paid the royalties to display hi-def content, there is no “answer” and the graphics card will scramble the signal being sent. If you LCD is certified for hi-def media content it will “answer” and you’ll never know anything about it. The ask/answer scheme is clocked at 2 cycles; asked and answered ever 1/2 second.

Edit: Fwiw, if you have the LCD near your computer, it is highly likely you would not notice any diff between the VGA and DVI connections unless you have a hi-def LCD and a hi-def source for graphics. If you could tell the diff, it will be very slight. This presumes you aren't using some weird-assed old hardware.

Re: LCD Monitor?

Thanks all.
SS, I got the ICPowerhouse for $269 and it seems like a good one.
Nice colors and just a big difference to me after years of CRT.

18R, I was not too worried about the extra connections as I was price cause I don't do a whole lot on the puter, was just wondering what the other cable was for is all. Thanks for the explanation.

Re: LCD Monitor?

I forgot to mention that if you use a graphics card like the ATI All-In-Wonder, you can watch hi-def tv on your computer, if your LCD is hi-def. Many of the graphics cards now support DVI output for hi-def displays. The LCD on my laptop is 1800x1200 pixels, well beyond what is needed for a hi-def video display. Hi-def video is now everywhere in the world, except the US. The players are just starting to dribble in. I imagine hi-def displays will be the norm for computers within a couple of years.

Anyone considering hi-def graphics (computer or flat screen displays) should look into and consider audio as well. HDMI is an all-in-one, 19-pin cable that moves both digital hi-def video and multi-channel hi-def audio, but is held in place by friction. Not unusual to hear about cables that fall out. Panasonic is moving away from spec’d HDMI for that reason, instead promoting DVI connectors that are held in place by a screw on each side of the connector like a VGA cable. I heard rumors that HDMI2 uses a mechanical clip to secure the connection, don’t know, haven’t seen one. If you are into making your own cabling, DVI is a no brainer, HDMI is hard to get male connectors for. For hi-def applications, I use DVI for the graphics, and either a single coax cable to move the hi-def multi-channel audio, or 8 coax cables, one for each discrete channel.

Re: LCD Monitor?

Yea, that's what this one has, is the cables with 2 screws on them that hold it/them in place.

Its hard to give a good Answer on that one

There are a bunch of HDTV outputs 480i,p,720p,1080i and now 1080p

A CRT HDTV maxes out at 1920 x 1080 in ROUND NUMBERS most other types worm there way around that

All Sony XBR (top line) models:

Sony LCD 32 in. : 1289 x 768 = 983,040 pixels
($5,499)

Sony Plasma 42 in: 1024 x 768 = 786,432 pixels
($7,999)

Sony LCD 42 in.: 1366 x 768 = 1,049,088 pixels
($9,999)

Sony Plasma 50 in.: 1365 x 768 = 1,048,320 pixels
($9,999)

Sony Plasma 55 in.: 1365 x 768 = 1,048,320 pixels
($12,999) ouch

Sony Plasma 61 in.: 1365 x 768 = 1,048,320 pixels
($19,999) ow bigtime

Sony 34 in Tube HDTV: 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,000 pixels****
($2,199)

And everybody is broadcasting in different formats at this point 16:9,4:3

I get 14 HD channels and you need to Tweak each one to fill the screen correctly  and my HD box is to stupid to remenber the settings for different channels  BUT they do look great.

I think 720p will end being the standard for the near future.

I have had a few ATI ALL IN WONDERS and like the one i have now but tv on a computer is Mediocre at best compared to a true HDTV.

I have a 1600 x 1200 computer display and a TV just does a better job of being a TV

And read any review AIW products are a real pain in th AZZ to install and get working correctly

tommays
