I have a 1995 1995 Model J150EXEOM sn G03788662.

Compression is:
95 96
95 100
88 95

It spits pretty heavily through the lower port carb (88). I have a factory manual and have removed the carbs and I'm to the point of actually looking through the intake manifold and I can see suction side of the reeds. They the lower bank looks just like the uppers. Do I need to totally dis-assemble the reeds to tell if their bad?

I'm already planning on re-building all 6 carbs as the motor has just over 700 hrs on it.

Update. I pulled the intake and looked over the leaf's one is half missing....lengthwise Where'd it go?

Should I be looking for something better than stock? I assume I should replace all the valves (both sideds) as I'm this far????

Anyone got a good source for these?

Yes. Replace all reeds, Richard. You might get a trivial increase in performance by using Boyesen reeds, but I don't trust their longevity. I would use OEM reeds.

Your compression is just within the 15% spread criterion, but the low cylinder may have been slightly damaged when the portion of the broken reed was swallowed. Probably worth while to inspect the inside of that cylinder and the piston top.

I'd heard about the boyesen reeds. Looking to fish not fly so OEM is the way to go for me. I looked into the cylinder from inside the reed area and through the spark plug hole with an orthoscopic probe. It looked as clean and scratch free as it's other five brothers. I think I got lucky :)

Thanks JB

Either the OE reeds or the Boyesens will work fine in this case. The Boyesens will last a very long time if the motor is running right. I've had them outlast pistons in modified motors, had them last years and years in ski & fishing motors. About the only thing that hurts them is if the motor runs lean at idle and spits back. That'll burn the reed pretty quickly.
