Hi:

I am going to replace the leaf springs on my 1991 single axle Escort trailer. My boat weighs 3500# with fuel and gear, are the standard 1750# capacity per leaf spring okay to install?

I will replace one side at a time with the boat on the trailer, where can I jack up the frame and place a jack stand?

Thanks very much,

Mike

Re: Leaf Spring Replacement Help

If it is a manufactured trailer it should state the trailer capacity on the data plate. Get springs to match this.

If the plate is unreadable and the 3500 lbs includes the trailer then 1750 per spring would be fine. What you said though was the 3500 was for the boat fuel and gear and didn't mention trailer being included in that weight. You also need to consider any additional weight you may carry. I know myself that the boat hauls bikes, skatboards, fishing gear, etc when we go on extended vacation.

Re: Leaf Spring Replacement Help

Much easier job to do with out the boat on it . measure the length and width of the spring pack and # of leaves and get the same size. Generally the rating is for the axle assembly not per side. If you have that much weight on a 1750 # axle keep a close eye on the wheel bearings cause you are way overloading them.
