I have a 1994 mercury 40 horse 4 cylinder, when I start the motor theres a leak on the carbs, has two carbs the leak seems to be at a screw which has a spring on it, what is this screw for and would turning the screw stop the leak? I wont to learn to fix this motor myself to save money, manuel is orderd.

Re: leak at carb

That'd be the idle mixture screw. They're usually set somewhere around a turn out depending on where you're at. They should both be set the same. Shouldn't leak out that high or side of the carb. I'm guessing you're seeing the gas coming out of the lower carb's idle mixture screw? Probably dripping off the top carb. Biggest concern when working with those carbs is synchronizing them once they're back on.
