ok...Out to get the parts today. Had a question though, I have the PLASTIC fitting for the drive I use to fill drive with oil. Will the plastic fitting be ok or do I need the metal fitting?
If you're filling the drive,..
It don't much Matter, as long as the drive gets Filled...
If you're going to use the fitting for building a Pressure Tester,...
I'd go with the Metal Fitting,... With it's o-ring, it's a much more Sure thing to seal...
Can't get a vacume more than 2 and even then, it looses that.
Oil is worse now than it was when I first started this thread. I'll post pics of oil later (i'm on the slow comp, admiral on the light speed comp). Oil is milky, and no longer clear.
Upper half is off the boat now. Bellows is without water. U-Joint is without any signs of rust and with plenty of grease like I left it back in NOV of 08.
To summarize:
Lower unit holds pressure and vacuum.
Upper unit holds pressure but NOT vacuum more than 2.
OK I think I found the problem but need confirmation by the experts.
In this picture you'll find a seal of some sort with the inner spring out partially. Is this the Drive Shaft Housing Bushing or the Lower drive shaft Housing Oil Seal?
With the milky oil around it, this make me believe this is it.
After reviewing the Mercruiser manual #6, Drive Shaft Housing Disassembly Chapter, I decided to pry the bushing/seal (whatever) out. Out it came very easily with a flat head screwdriver.
There was nothing but a bushing/seal housing and the spring that comes with it - there was no rubber left.
How could it even hold pressure like it did? Anyhow, can someone identify the part so I can order it? Thanks!!
Got the upper reseal kit and replaced the small seal from above pictures. In order to replace the rest of the seals I need the spanner nut wrench, I'm waiting on the wrench to arrive to finish the job.
Since the drive is down, I'm also replacing the trim limit/position units. I'm thinking on replacing the shift cable but don't wanna get anymore tools for now. I'll probably leave the cable for another day.
Bellows still new except some rub marks on both port and starboard side. Couldn't figure out what was rubbing.
Until the tool arrives, the upper and lower units are in garbage bags to prevent moisture and dust contamination.
