leaking carb barrel

Ive got a 1984 evinrude 140 , it doesnt idle very well , it loads up and dies, but runs like a top at high speeds. Anyway, I took off the both carbs and cleaned them, needle seats and floats seem too work, and all jets were clear. I ran the engine on earmuffs in the driveway with the airbox off and noticed fuel running out of the back of the bottom carb on one side of carb only. I cant tell exactly where in the carb its coming from but looks like its running down the butterfly in the right barrel of the bottom carb only and is dry on the left barrel. This would explain the loading up at idle and poor fuel economy, but I cant figure out why a carb would leak on just half the carb Any ideas would be appreciated.

You may need to replace the needle and seat on the leaking carb. It is part of a carb kit sold by Bombardier. p/n 439076. That kit also comes with a new float-best to replace it.

i ran all the way through the carb and it is in perfect condition. when i pulled the carb off i look up into the intake from the carb and the cylinder that it runs to has reeds right at the entrance and one of them has a hole in it. So could it be getting to much fuel and just floodind itself and running back out? One more thing i did after that is while the engine was running i pulled the plug wire off of that same cylinder and there was asolutly no power loss, which would explain the idling issue.

Unusual for a metal reed to get a hole in it. (Usual failures is for the tip to break off). If you have a hole in it, likely some of the fuel/air mixture sucked into the crankcase will get pushed back out through that hole on the compression stroke. Would be normal to see cyclic squirts back out of that hole every engine rev. You'll need to pull the intake and get a new reed box.

Turns out the 389823 reed box has been discontinued. No stock avalaible from from Bombardier. Last selling price was in the $ 110 range. For that price you might find another option more appealing. You might consider replacing all the reeds with composite ones, from a supplier like Boyesen. You will like the smooth idling and midrange pickup.

thanks for he help and i orderd new reeds, i do believe that it is the idling issue if the one cylinder is dead until running at wot when the reeds open up. That should also fix my problem of not being able to plane out with the power loss until at wot but all the weight still there.
