Leaking fuel at carb???..

Hey guys, I have a Yam 2002 15hp 4 stroke.

I use it on my duck boat and have been cranking it up every few weeks for the past few months and this past weekend had some issues keeping it running. I think it's sucking air through the fuel hose at the point it enters the carb. My question is this. When you squeeze the fuel bulb, and the line is full, should it squirt fuel out of the line at this point? The little wire clamp on it can be very easily squeezed with your fingers like it really has no clamping power at all. It seem to me if fuel can pass through that point then it would be just as easy or easier for air to pass. It will run for 10 seconds or so then die.

Thanks,

Chris

better go to Yamaha dealer and buy a couple of feet of their gas tubing and some new clamps and replace your gas connections. if one is leaking then maybe it's time to replace them all. don't use automotive fuel hoses, just the real Yamaha tubing. when you pump the bulb it should get hard and not "squirt out" of anywhere. Good Luck!

Thanks Robert! I didn't think it should leak anywhere at all. The engine was worked on 6 months ago and all these hoses were replaced. I think the little wire clamp might just be the old one and has "lost" its spring. I'm gonna replace it with a clamp with some backbone.

Am I thinking correctly when I say there's a good chance it's pulling in air at this point as well? Or does that sound a little off?

maybe a new spring clamp, better check them all just to be sure. use the original type spring clamps and not another screw type or aeroclamp. might check the hose diameter to be sure it's not a bit too big making it hard to seal. maybe the hose has some damage to the end where the leak is. I really wouldn't expect a correctly sized and installed hose to leak even without a clamp, especially on a low pressure area like the carb. Easy fix!

It will suck air only on the suction side of the pump not the pressure side, that side will just leak fuel. You maybe putting more pressure on the line when you squeeze the bulb than the pump puts out normally. Does it leak while running?

For the few seconds that it runs before dying, it does not appear to leak any fuel.
