Leaking Greenish Oil

I just had a lower unit repaired on a 70 hp 2 cycle. I brought it home and parked it in the garage. I left the transom saver on the engine/trailer. I noticed a small puddle of greenish liquid (oil or lube) coming off the scag. is this because the engine is at an non-vertical angle?

That is probably new gear oil leaking from your gearcase. See if you can figure out where it is coming from, starting with the vent and fill plugs.

Does it matter if I store the ewngine with the transom saver or should I take it off and let the engine down?

There is a small trickle coming from the drain plug right above the skeg. Found the leak. Now is this something that I should try to fix or take it back to the repair shop and let them finish the job? I only ask this because I do not want to overtighten the plug. It is not sitting flush.

All of us think that the vent and fill plug seals should be replaced anytime that the plugs are opened.

Personally, I buy the seals in bags of 50 from iboats and just don't have to think about it. PN 18-42481-9 Gasket-drain/fill.

A good wrench might not have left that for you to have to worry about, so yeah, *****.

BTW, always try to store the engine in the running position. It is better for midsection drainage, keeps water out of the gearcase that could freeze, and allows the engine to drain completely. When possible, grease the PT&T rams and completely withdraw them so that they are protected.

If the lower unit has just been "repaired" nthen take it back for them to finish the job properly (and top the lower unit lube back up again)

Uttom, did you run the boat since the repair but before noticing the leak? If so, you most likely have water in the lower unit mixed with the unit oil (it shouldn't be greenish if its straight gear oil)

It may simply be a leak around the plug but the oil should still be swapped out if its full of water as a result of the leak.

Ezeke, I went to the website and searched on that part num and I see 1 LU washer for $2.99. Surely you dont pay that for 50?

No I did not. I brought it straight home form the shop and put it in the garage. It is somewhere between lime green and turquoise.

I just replaced my LU gear oil with Johnson/Evinrude HPF XR stuff and its a greeny color out of the bottle.

Thought I'd ask as mine is usually more brownish but I guess it depends on the type of lube being used.

The drain plug is not sitting flush? Is it straight into the recess or cocked? Hopefully it's only loose and not cross threaded. Definately take it back to the shop. If they put the plug in crooked and messed up the threads, it's on them to make it right.
