I have a leaking seal on the power tilt for my 91 Mercury 100hp outboard. The motor still goes up and down no problem and I do not have a puddle of fluid on the ground but I would like to fix this leak anyways. Can somebody tell me what this seal is called and how to replace it? I googled around a bit but didn't exactly find out how to replace it. Thanks

There is probably a seal kit available for that PTT unit. It is best to remove the PTT unit from the motor. You will need a spanner to remove the top of the cylinder. After the top of the cylinder is off, the replacement is easy. Check the tilt rod for burrs, as these will ruin any new seal. Exploded pictures of the PTT unit are avail on the web.

Do yourself a favor and check the bottom of the PTT unit, where the tilt cylinder pivots. The trim cylinder casting is subject to wear there. If there is wear there or a leak, it may not be worthwhile to rebuild the PTT, as you might need to replace the trim cylinder.

Thanks for the information. I will take a look on google and hopefully get the leak fixed soon. Cheers.
