Leaking shift shaft seal (replacement) without disassembly

78 Johnson 55hp

Water intrusion in gearbox. Pressure tested and found the shift shaft seal to have a leak.
I can unscrew the shift rod and unbolt the shift cover to replace the o ring, gasket and shift seal
Question I have is will I be able to re install the shift rod from the top without dis-assembling the gearcase?
I don't have the 2 pullers and the shaft socket to be able to disassemble the gearbox that is why I ask

Yes. Just leave the new housing unbolted, use a flashlight and you can get the shift rod threaded right back in.
Then, slide the housing down and bolt in place. Use some Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealer on the four bolts to keep corrosion down.
Set it for the correct height, dimensions are in the Top Secret sticky top of page one.

Before you take it apart, screw the shift rod in till it bottoms and count the turns. When you reassemble, bottom out the rod and count the same number of turns going out. It should keep the shift rod adjusted properly.
