I call it selectable exhaust because I am not sure which brand it is and I'm not near he boat right now. Its a 1998 Mirage 257 Cuddy with a Merc 502 Magnum and Bravo I drive. It has thru transom as well at thru prop exhaust selectable by a switch on the dash.

Over the summer I was out for a ride when the boat started to overheat due to a bad water impeller. It didn't get too hot before I shut it down and got towed back in. Problem is, the motor got hot enough that I think it melted/deformed the o-rings that seal where the flapper in the exhaust pipe goes through the side of the pipe and connects to the actuator. With the motor running both sides having small amounts of water dripping out. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to go about replacing these??

Clear as Mud? :)

Thanks,
Casey

Find out what brand they are and get the seal kits for them. Some use just ordinary o-rings, others use quad-rings.

You probably melted the seals during the over-heat.

Normally to replace the seals, you remove the flappers (screws holding them to the shaft) the pull the shaft out..Replace the seals and re-assemble......no rocket science here.

I tinkered with it a little over the summer but could not get the flappers out....Do the exhaust pipes need to come off in order to get the job done?

Thanks,
Casey

Ok, if the pipes need to come off this is where I was stopped last time i fooled with it.. I realize this may sound like a dumb obvious question so I appreciate you guys taking time to help me out.

My exhaust pipes are in the shape of a 'Y'.... They are coupled at all three ends using THICK "rubber" type couplers with 2 worm drive clamps per connection (total of 12 clamps per pipe). Is there a trick or method for getting these things out of the boat? There seems to be almost ZERO wiggle room to move the pipes around and get them loose as those couplers are really stiff.

Thanks Again,
Casey

Ayuh,.........

My Guess Is,........

You'll need the loosen,+ free up the Thru-hull pipes, to shift them Aft......
Then relieve the Clamps on the Selectable Assembley,+ slide it Aft, off the Risers,+ Up off the Y-pipe at the same time.......

Sounds very much like Merc's 'Silent-choice' system..

You can loosen all the clamps on the y-pipe hoses and slide the hoses down the y-pipe. As for the hoses at the transom, you can either do as Bondo said or you can unbolt the risers and disassemble it that way. since the boat is 10 years old, removing the risers, inspecting the gasket surfaces is reccommended anyway.
