I bought a 1960 35hp Gale outboard last year. I got the engine running great. I had to put a new pinion gear in the gear case because the old one had sheered off. When i put it back together I noticed that I'm leaking gear oil out of two spots. Refer to the link at the end of this message. I think a bit of permatex on the top leak will fix that one, however the oil that's coming out of the perferated holes on the cover that you see in the picture has me stumped. Please help!!

Re: Leaky Bottom

I think it is pretty much impossible for gear oil to leak at those points. My guess is it is exhaust residue.if the motor was inverted about the only way for gear oil to leak would be bad seals on the drive shaft or shift shaft.or possibly a crack in the gearcase.<br /> If the gearcase is losing oil the level will be low and if you ran it in the water there will be water in the gearcase and the oil may be milky.

Well, It really pours out of these areas and I'm sure it's gear oil. I had the shifter rod out and the drive shft out so maybe I wrecked on of the seals when putting it back together. So I'm guessing that the only way to tell is to tear it apart again, right? and what do you mean by "inverted"?

Re: Leaky Bottom

If you turned the motor upside down while assembling or storing/moving then oil could get out of the lower unit.I checked your pictures again and I realy don't see how oil could pour out unless the seals are totaled or not there.Have you check the oil level?Did you fill it from the bottom hole until oil came out the top hole?Does the oil come out when you run it or while at rest as well?

Re: Leaky Bottom

The oil only comes out when the engine is running. As for the engine being upside down, I never had it upside down but i can't speak for whoever owned it before me. I filled the gearcase from the top hole and I havn't had a chance to check the oil level yet. I fired it up a couple times last year when there wasn't any oil in the gearcase and it didn't leak at all. but now that there is oil in the gearcase it really leaks bad.
