Leaky drain plug - Need advice.

Hey All,

First off, the actual drain plug itself isn't the problem. I have a fiberglass boat. There is a metal sleeve that fits into the drain plug hole at the rear of my boat. This metal sleeve is a little loose. The water comes in from between the metal sleeve & the fiberglass. I tried waterproof caulk. It helped a little, but some water is still leaking in. It's not a big problem... ( I get about a gallon of water in after an afternoon of boating). But I'd still like to get a tight seal. My boat doesn't have a bilge pump.

Any advice on what to use that will bond the metal sleeve to the fiberglass? Is there a marine product out there for this job?

Craig

Any good marine sealant will do. Read the label as some types are made for 'above waterline'.

You have to make sure the transom and mounting area is completely clean and dry.

Suggest you remove the whole plug assembly, leave the transom to dry (looong time drying), apply sealant to the metal sleeve and refit it. Finally check the inside and make sure it seals properly. Add sealant on the inside if needed, remove any excess.

Do UU's repair using 3M 5200 sealant. It's "below the water line" stuff and it works. You can get it at any boat store and at some Walmarts.
