leaky force

Working on a 1996 75 hp Force. Noticed what seemed to be excessive water filling the drive shaft housing and leaking out from around the kingpin area of the drive shaft housing (midsection). Checked the pump out and found the gasket for the water pump cover was torn. Replaced and tested; still the same. Removed the powerhead to inspect and found several suspect items. Water tube grommet was pinched and had a hole worn into it. Foam exhaust tube seal was deformed as well. Replaced all gaskets and seals, etc. Ran on hose......same thing! Is this normal? The water pump and shift shaft cavity in the motor leg is filling with water.Once full water runs out around kingpin and lower motor mount. Any response is appreciated.

Re: leaky force

Hi Grant

If the water pump housing is worn, water will escape around drive shaft. A little usually does, but not as much as you describe.

Re: leaky force

My 96 force 90 does the same thing. I tried all of your solutions but found after 2 years it hasn't affected the engine cooling so I have left it alone. If you have a good stream comming out of the telltale then I would just leavi it alone. :D

Re: leaky force

My '95 70hp does it too. Thought I bought a real headache 6 years ago, then found out it was happening on others too. Only real long term effect I am aware of is that the exhaust residue crud will get on the area.

Re: leaky force

Just a thought... My Force 150 Did the same 2 years ago. and the problem was the water jacket Gasket Had pushed out @ the base and leaked. it can only be seen when running. The jacket had to be under presure. You guys may want to re-think looking @ that. Dont want to take any chances over heating.

Re: leaky force

Hey I thought of that and thats why I installed a water pressure gauge on the boat. But everything come up to spec. Usuall have about 18psi at full throttle and 5 at idle so everything is up to spec. :D

Re: leaky force

Yes, it is normal.
Water builds up in the leg, usually only at idle speeds, because the water doesn't flow out thru the prop hub fast enough.

When you accelerate, the increased exhaust flow and movement through the water, kind of sucks the water out through the prop.

As long as the motor is not overheating, let it be.

Happy boating.

Re: leaky force

Thanks for that.

I don't have a heat read out for the motor. Mind you I don't really go that far with it.
