A few weeks ago I replaced a seriously bad upper driveshaft bearing and seals. Other LU seals new recently. I took it out and ran about 4 gallons thru. Ran great, but milky oil again on return inspection.
I did not replace Lower Bearing. I expect it is not good, but I don't see how it could cause leakage since there are no seals near it. If I decide to go deeper, will that bearing come out in a civilized manner?

I'm Missing Something.
Please help! What could it be??

Posted this History earlier.
Yesterday I removed this upper driveshaft bearing from my 1972 Johnson 65.
Have a look!

I replaced the lower unit last summer. It had lost reverse. Yes, it is an electric shift. It had a smashed shift cog. Miraculously, I found a used gearbox locally. I replaced all the seals and pressure tested. It passed, so last October I put it in the water for about a month.

Brought it home. Checked the LU oil. It was about half water!

I did another pressure test, only a few pounds this time. I turned the shaft and stressed everything. Finally heard it hissing when I leaned on the shaft. I removed the water pump and noticed some play. Pulled the bearing and gasped!

The bearing pins, as you can see, are worn completely flat on one side. On the other side they are still nice and round. Unfortunately I did not notice which side (front, back, left or right) the flat ones were on.

I'm wondering how it could have worn in this pattern, and so severely. Could the shaft be pushing somehow in one direction? On the top, it is held by the crankshaft, which is quite fixed. On the bottom is the lower bearing. Also fixed.

Comments, anyone??
