If your recirc system is not functioning properly, it may not idle as well as it should. Any problems with that recirc system should not be the primary contributor to a lean cyl on #1. You can get an internal overheat (lean condition) if the water diverter for that cyl is out of place or missing. It may not show up as an overheated head with a laser temp gun. I'd replace that crank seal. When the engine is running and you pull the #1 spark plug wire off, does the engine slow down at all? If so, then it is getting fuel to that cyl.

Thanks. The water diverters are new, I replaced the old, completely shot ones that had to be one of the main reasons of the previous overheat. I'll test that pulling plug 1 this weekend. If the weather holds, I'm just going in and doing the crank seal, no point in wondering about it when I have the part ready to go...
