Lean Spitting 1999 Ocean Pro 200hp

I have an Aquasport 215 Explorer with a Johnson 200hp Ocean Pro- 2 stroke carbed- of course. Engine serial# G06475995. It starts pretty good, runs good when warm, starts right away when warm. It lean spits(and jerks) at neutral idle. I have heard that I could richen the low speed idle on the carb? Or adjust the throttle?

Secondary less important- the classic, real smokey startup too- LOL (OMS still connected).

Love the engine, powerful and runs like silk when it gets going- not too smokey while running, if at all.

Expert advice needed.

i think i would do some trobule shooting before, throwing parts at it. spark test all cylinders gap 1/2 inch, with a tester. compression check all cylinders, all within 10% of each other.

when was the engine last Decarbed?

Decarbed- not sure...it had been sitting for at about 4 months before I bought it. Dealership "said" it had been "serviced", but who knows....Would compression do this, even if it runs good normally?

it is a 6 cylinder, it could run on 4 cylinders, then miss at idle. same for spark. sitting for 4 months the pick up tubes for idle circuit could be partially clogged with varnish.

get a mechanic inclined friend to help you , spark and compression are very easy.

Update....Mechanic says they had the carbs apart. Running much better now, but the idle screw on one of the cyclinders "pops back out" when you try to screw it in. He doesnt know if its a spring or if they need to replace the throttle body? Do you think they may have reassembled the carb wrong?

Could have been damaged accidentally when they had the carb bodies off.
When you remove the black plastic carb bodies, those idle adj screws are completely exposed, protruding from the aluminum throttle plate.

Look up your engine on shop.evinrude.com, drill down to the carburetor section and see the diagrams.

This is going to cost a fortune for you to fix if it is a stripped threaded hole in the throttle body. Throttle body alone is over $200.00, and there is a bunch of labor...throttle plate synchronization, then a complete link and sync....

Thanks for the help. Yeah no one else has heard of stripped threads on a mixture screw either. Their only out is if someone else screwed it up before it got to them. We'll see shortly.

I will repeat...I truly think it is possible for those threads to have developed aluminum oxide corrosion over the years....and when they turned the adj screw, the remaining threads simply disintegrated to the point that they won't hold. Look for a bunch of white powdery residue on/around the damaged hole.

Anyway...let me know if I can help...and consider seriously putting a set of 225 carbs on it....

As soon as we get a good compression check done...then the 225 is a consideration. It runs like a raped ape at any throttle other than idle, so Im almost convinced that its an idle screw issue. But here's my next question.....if the idle screw was stripped and wont stay in, am I correct in thinking that stuck out is rich, and stuck in is lean, but the only way to make it not fall out of the throttle body altogehter is to tighten it full in, and thats whats going on.

BTW they said that the carbs looked good..no carbon, and also didnt need to be fully rebuilt. And that it runs great until the screw pops out.

Update. Just needed a new mixture screw. Something was wrong with the threads, or spring I guess..... new Throttle body wasn't necessary. Thanks Doug.
