What you guys think of premix with a leaner mix like 60:1 or 70:1 for a small kicker 8 HP Chrysler that I am using only for trolling ? Do you believe that will hurt any ?

Thanks

Smoky :)

Well, SF, it would make less smoke.

Variable ratio oil injection systems on bigger outboards lean out as much as 150:1 for idle and slow trolling.

On the other hand, you are talking about a small engine, and a Chrysler.

I wouldn't risk it.

Good question. I've wanted to try this myself with my 8hp Mariner kicker but I haven't risked it yet. I've already propped it down with a sailboat prop and I run the hottest plugs I can find in it and I still get fouled plugs and an oily mess out the exhaust after several hours of running at low speed. I never run it over ¼ throttle.

I say go for it use synthetic oil at 70 to 1 should have no problems.

Thanks JB,

But I may gonna try it - since it is an old 1973 and I didn't pay much for it, what I am trying is to get rid a bit of smoke and the oil mess in the exhaust.

Smoky

I find this thought patern interesting. You have a machine that was engineered and designed to use, (in this case 50:1 oil ratio) fast or slow. Now the engine is older so lets use less oil. Fouled plugs and excesive oil resedue, etc are caused by the motor being out of tune, not by the amount of oil being used (if mixed to specs to begin with). So instead repairing/servicing a motor new or old, lets cut the oil. This will defenatly cut down on smoke, and when you smoke the power head due to lack of oil, you can break out a few grand for a new one. 2 stroke outboard smoke smells good, is good to look at, it a wonderful thing, it lets you know your motor is healthy or needs a little atten. This idea of engines not smoking is a modern thing and is here to stay. We have to enjoy the smoke while we can.

Smokyforce
When I was having a lot of trouble with my motor fouling plug while trolling I ask the OMC factory rep at the boat show that question.

His answer was for trolling speeds would be ok up to 100 to 1 but if you open it up will do damage at that ratio.

Smokey,
Try the Amsoil 100:1 pre-mix oil.
It is made to run at that ratio for all speeds, regardless of the mfgr. recommended ratio, and will produce a lot less smoke while protecting your engine.
Email me if you want more info....

Dave

Re: Leaner mix for trolling

Thanks again for all the replies,

Hey ALCAN, the 50:1 mix is to fit the engine that don't have injection oil system, so with 50:1 it will give enough lubrication for low speed as well as high speed but the motor don't need that much oil at idle or low throttle for trolling and yes I am concern about the smoke - more smoke means that it is to much oil unburn and means more polution - knowing that I am using an old bird 30 years old I am trying to run it with decent emission.

Smoky

Re: Leaner mix for trolling

I had some fouling problems with a '71 Johnson 4 and my solution was simple ... use hotter plugs. Instead of Champion J6J, I used J12J's w/o any problems for many years. Now you need to know that prolonged operation with a hot plug can burn a piston, but for 10 hour trolling days, it worked fine.
