So, where should I begin...?

We took out our '89 Cobalt 192 Condurre out to the lake this past weekend. Everything was great. We tubed, cruised around the lake, etc. The boat ran great, minus it stalling when going into forward gear and pulling up to the dock. Around 5pm or so, it was time to head in and set up camp for the night. We unloaded and I moored the boat off to the side of the dock, away from other boats that would've liked to use the dock. Unbeknownst to me, during this time of year, the lake drops TWO FEET  a day! So guess what happened? Well, not wanting the boat to move around during the night due to wake caused by other boats, I left NO slack in my mooring line. So if by now you are saying "Uh Oh", you'd be correct. When we woke up the following morning, our boat was completely out of the water and lying on her side :(. Talk about wanting to cry. Making matters worse was a serious hangover from the debauchery the night before. So we packed up camp and started on our walk of shame down to the boat. Thankfully the park rangers were there to offer sage advice. They told us to get her up back up on center and push her off. So while they did that, my buddy and I "lifted", as much as you lift a 19' foot boat standing in mud , up on the swim platform so the outdrive wouldn't get torn off. Sure enough, she slid nicely back into the water. She also started back up just fine and we were on our way. So boys and girls, what's the takeaway from all this? Situational awareness and experience will help minimize potential fun ending experiences. I hope this helps...Cheers!

I was imagining the boat hanging on its side off the dock.

This is from a section of the Colorado River where the water drops a lot each night, but then comes back up by noon. These people had just got in the previous afternoon, and I could hear them making fun of me anchoring waaaaay off the beach in the dark and swimming back in. A little devil made me keep my mouth shut, sorry . . .

That is outstanding sir! Here is my "outstanding" moment as well. Note the pontoon behind my boat. It stayed there ALL night because the mooring line had plenty of slack in it:redface:

You had a great opportunity to work on any water lines to the hull! Well, just be grateful it's a Cobalt. Their hulls are strong enough to take this kind of situation and still give you years of issue free use.

WTF didn't the Helpful Park Rangers stop giving people advice on how to unground thier boats and put up some friggin' signs warning people so they don't end up grounded in the first place?

Re: Learned a valuable lesson this past weekend!

cool, another success story after the facts...

couple years ago i got blown up on the beach in high overnight winds. i was sideways to the lake and on the beach. waves slamming my boat sideways for 10+ hours. it was a drag for sure... it was only me and the ol'lady and we couldn't budge it. got help from friends in town later on. 4 adults and we were able to get her bow to the lake and back floating in the lake. an experience i won't soon forget..
oh, i don't have a cobalt either... aristocraft must make good boats too. i had no damage either... well, short of a little sanding of my gel coat at the very back... :( i'll take it. as lesson was learned w/o much damage..

Here in east Tn most of the water is controlled by TVA. They are constantly raising and lowering the water levels so that's not an uncommon sight. All you do is slap yourself in the head for not anchoring out farther, pop a cold one and sit back and wait.

BTW, ever seen a boat on jacks for painting/maintenance? If I'm worried about hull issues I'd sure as heck rather she was laying over on 50% of the hull instead of six jacks with say 2% of the surface on each . . .

Warning signs? Are you kidding? Like we need more.
As a tidal boater, we all deal with this 4 times a day. And many tough lessons are learned.
Most new boaters are concerned about a boat getting caught under a pier on a rising tide, but a hung boat on a falling tide can be as perilous. it only takes a 1/2" overlap of pier and boat to cause a problem. And in storm tides, when piers go under, a tightly tied boat can be pulled under.
There is a lot of figuring to go into tying for both changing water levels and changing wind direction and current. This is also why you never retie another guy's boat unless it is clearly at risk as tied.

theres an area here where we can launch our boat in the river and take it out to the bay.. But theres a low bridge i remember 1 time a few years back launch the boat went under the bridge no problems came back hours later, Tide was in,.. Long story short We couldnt get back to the trailer... dumped out buddy took the boat to another part of the marina and he had to meet us over there..
