Re: leaving engine on without proper cooling
Off the cup advice:
1. Don't even LOOK at that starter key again until you've had a certified tech check it over...even if you replace the obvious melted parts. Everything these guys have said is true. Your Cylinder heads, manifolds, and backwash protection could be damaged. And if they are, and you run that engine that way you are looking at scorched main bearings, rod bearings, piston rings, and a host of other nightmares adding up to need of an new engine.
2. Among the other issues the clicking noise is probably because the shift or transom cable is damaged causing it to not have full range of motion...This will cause the shifter to click/grind and not go completely in gear...same thing as grinding the gears on a stick shift in a car.
And you were revving the engine up doing this??? JHC!
I'm the last person that should be pointing fingers because I am in the middle of a huge cluster fornication myself...But that was inheriently beyond ...Okay Im not gonna say it.
You need to drain the oil out of the drive and check the magnetic plugs for the filings, chips, and chunks you may have shreadded from your gear drive.
