I am looking at starting to use these in my home. Looks like a lot of them have problems with dimmers (have to use a 40 watt bulb with LED's so dimmer will see a load). Others are either on or off, no change in brightness and of course the first one I wish to replace is on a dimmer :( It also seems that they will only make about the same light as a 40 watt incandescent bulb (at the brightest) and I will be replacing some 100 watt bulbs.

OK fer da question/s,,,
Anyone out there already using LED home lighting?
If so what are your thoughts on them?

Now I am not trying to be *green* exactly, but it's 105* outside at the moment and the heat difference is great between LED and INCANDESCENT. Why heat the house with lights only to pay to cool it back off  And FLORESCENT lights cause some folks head aches, and some can hear the noise they make. LED's cost more up front, for know, but if they don't make heat that alone could save enuf to pay for them. (well it wont be fast)

And cap j where did I mention *energy saving* or *government*

By LED I guess you mean the compact fluorescent?

So I had this site that I sent some relatives to awhile back. (they think i know everything) :p and have used it to refresh my memory in converting the bulbs over. Also mentions the problems with dimmers.

As rwise mentioned, the heat difference is incredible, something like 75% between the two.

Enjoy!!

Here in Minnesota only about 15 days a year would we be worried about heat generated from a light bulb. If I burn that 40 watt incandescent light for 365 days a year all day long it will cost about $31. Even so I would only probably burn it for 4 hours a day and that would be a whopping $5.25 a year. Pretty hard to fuss over something so trivial.

I don't have any, but from what I have seen from Googling, the screw-ins look pretty pricey. You would have to save quite a bit of juice to justify a $40 light bulb.

It was about the same when screw-in fluorescent bulbs, first came on. Not much savings at $8 per bulb. It a bit different now that bulbs are $1.75, especially if kids don't know where the "off" switch is :)

CFls do last a long time but LEDs last longer and take less energy. The flip side is that LEDs are more expensive. As far as the 5 something savings think about that times 10 lights or more. It all adds up. If you have money (even 5 something) to throw away send it this way. Daddy needs a new motor.

I haven't tried them in my house and not sure if I want to. I do have them in the cabin of my boat. I don't care for the color of the light. The ones that I have act more like a spot light than a flood light. Presently I like the CFL's better.

First welcome to iboats! I was hoping that some one new of one that would screw into the existing socket with the dimmer on it (just a potentiometer). I find lots (times more) info on LED's, so many to chose from,,,,

SS Mayfloat you can get many colors of LED's I am leaning toward day light or pure white. Don't put those CFL's in a ceiling fan they don't last a week,,,,,:(

BMOLCHANY Don't have any to throw away, but since I got single I at least have some change :D man could that woman spend money,,,,,,,,

Re: LED home lighting

Saw a show on tv a few weeks ago, even the experts said that the really good LED lighting, and cost effective, is still 2 years away.

Personally, I have seen a few of the newer ones, and thought the light was harsh.

I will wait a while.
