I was just wondering if anyone with a boat same as mine could tell me whats the largest size motor that should be on my boat and still be legal. Its a 1988 17ft PolarKraft semi-v hull aluminum boat. I have a 85hp Evinrude on it now and it works fine, this motor was on the boat when we bought it used. I'm just wondering how much bigger I can go without overpowering the boat and still keep it legal.

Thanks for any info.

Check the maximum HP tag located somewhere in the boat -- normally in the area of the helm.

I have been doing repairs and upgrades to this boat and have been from one end to the other with it.... only plates I can find are ones with serial numbers. Havent found anything with hp recommendations.

I'd be surprised if you weren't already around the max HP for that boat with the 85.

Red, you probably are close to the max, and I can't imagine wanting more power on a
17' john boat. That 85 should push it along nicely. You might be able to go with a 90, but why not just contact Polarkraft and find out for sure? Welcome aboard.
