Less then full power

I have a Johnson/Evinrude 1965 6hp outboard. It runs and starts likes new except that once in a while (more often then not) it will not reach full throttle power. I am told that there are power valves that need some attention. Ever experience this? Fuel is premium and in good shape.

Power valves? No such thing on your old 6hp.

More than likely you are only running on one cylinder. Easiest way to check is to remove one of the plug wires next time the motor exhibits the loss of power. Might be as simple as a bad spark plug, but given the age of your motor, it may be a coil, points or condenser - or a combination of all three. I would start with a thorough cleaning and gapping of the points. If the points are pitted, replace them. If the coils are cracked, replace them. Also, check your plug wires for cracks where they may be arcing to the motor block.

Very well could be a dirty carb. I had the same problem with my 1977 35hp. it took 4X for me to get the carb cleaned.
