I have never priced Bayliners the size of RGrew176's. My comments about resale should be defined a little better. They are regarding their 17-23 foot open bow boats. These are where I observed a lot of 6 month to 1 year old boats with large discounts in price in my area.

This summer I bought a well cared for 1985 Bayliner 1600 Capri Cuddy Cabin. Used it for a few weeks toward the end of the summer. Its all original, including the Force 85hp outboard. It really exceeded my expectatons (probably because of all the crap I read about them). Runs and handles really nice.

I would buy another well cared for Bayliner when looking for my next boat.

They are an outstanding buy used. Keep looking until you find a nice one. There are so many out there. And forget about e-bay, look in the local papers and Craigs list.

Wait, this is a new one on me. So OMC outdrives are also taboo? I hadn't heard that. All of them? So say a Ford 5.0 liter engine with a the OMC outdrive should be avoided? So, who do we like for outdrives?

I like OMC Cobra outdrives but if you're not doing all of your own maintenance and repairs then I would stay far away from them. Mechanics just don't know what they're doing with them anymore and parts aren't terrible to find but it's not like you can walk into any marine store and find exactly the part you need. If you already have one, I wouldn't get rid of it but if you're looking for a new-to-you boat, I'd stay away from them unless you particularly like working on them.

I should have mentioned that. I do all my own work, so a little extra attention to a motor or drive doesn't scare me too bad. It's the big, expensive parts that I'm more concerned about. ;)

What "parts" are more expensive than an engine and a drive . . .

None. But why would I assume that a problem would mean replacing the entire engine and outdrive? My point was that I can fix things. So if an outdrive requires more maintanence, it wouldn't scare me so bad since I'm doing it, not paying a shop.

No matter what year or what make, have any wood tested for moisture content (transom, floor, stringers). I have seen a number of posts where someone has installed smart tabs, and water has come out of the holes. This is on 2000+ year boats. Some only a year or two old.
