Hi Guys,

Well, here at low budget central ( AKA my place ) I am trying to get my boat painted with leftover paint I already have.

I am wondering if anybody has ever painted their boat with an
exterior laytex ? (25 year warrenty) I have painted my truck with this stuff with great results but am wondering how well it will hold up on a boat.

I do not plan on leaving it in the water full time, but would suspect it will be in the water up to 12hrs at a time. ( about twice a month )

any advice is appreciated ...

i was half expecting something kinky from that thread title....

but being a fellow bottom feeder who's unafraid to display his ignorance, i'll jump in here....

i'm not sure it would stand up to 12 hrs of immersion without lifting from the hull, even if you prepped it right (which would cost you enough that you might as well buy the paint on the outside, where you have to look at it). you might try to find some cheap exterior enamel.....Home Despot etc often have unwanted-color gallons for way cheap.

and given that it's a tinnie, there's always the option of Just Leaving It As Is....not like it's going to rust or rot for lack of paint, even in salt water.

i'm curious how your truck came out looking with the exterior latex...

When Rustoleum is as cheap as it is and has been proven effective by numerous members on here......I think it would be silly to even try anything cheaper.

Agree on Rusto enamel. I just sanded mine. Removed layers of silver paint, 2 coats of white Rusto clean metal prime, and so far 2 pre-winter coats of their semi-gloss white. The old bag will get 2 more coats after winter before striping and decals.

I have also used this stuff on a previous Star that had a white painted factory hull. I overcoated twice with it and it holds strong. About 8 bucks a quart.

somewhere in the late 70's early 80's my brother painted his 1971 Camaro (plain jane) that was already white, with White Latex House Paint and a Roller. I didn't care for the texture myself. The car was my mothers.

I would suggest you stay away from latex. I used the Rusto Latex primer on mine and it scraped right off. I just don't think it will stick to aluminum.

As a side note N1265, you don't have to post a new thread with each question. Just continue on in your own restoration thread, people will check it out and answer questions. Good Luck

If you take your time with the Rusto oil based enamel, good results are found. The "experts" say topcoat within 30 days of priming. That's OK. I say, prime, wait a day, prime again, wait a few days, then decide to prime a 3rd time, which I did.

Then, 1st topcoat, 2nd, then whatever.

I have a slide show on Y-tube that shows the truck project from start to finish. In it you will see the truck painted in a couple of variations. All of the paint on the exterior of the truck is flat exterior laytex
( except for the plow ) sprayed threw a HVLP gun.

I also have a couple of recient pictures of the truck and a rim with a color chip that I dipped in a can of paint five years ago. altho the truck itself has been painted a couple of times over the last five years, it was done just because I wanted to change the look of the truck, not because of any chipping or fading with the paint. I believe the color difference with the chip and the truck if from a new batch of paint from the last time I painted the truck. Some of the paint came from SW and some came from Lowes...

It is worthy to note, that the paint on the rims have been the same for 5 years. witch would of been the same batch as the color chip...


And if you never seen an award winning truck at a car show with Latex paint, Then you can go ahead and check it off your " bucket list "...

I agree that rusto will produce results plenty good enough for me, I just thought that I could use some stuff I had laying around and toyed with the idea of painting the boat the same color as my truck.

I also kinda thought that with all the hillbilly camo rigs you see on the river during Duck season that a few of them might be painted in Latex.

This is out of date but by accident I panted an old lifeboat with latex house paint. I sent my future wife out to get the paint. When we panted the boat I remarked as to how smooth it was going on. I went to clean up the brushes and check the can as to what solvent to use. WATER !!! Too late now. We had to wait several days to be launched; when it went in I was looking for the paint slick! Nope it held well and when we pulled the boat in the fall the slime just washed off. Haven?t had the courage to try it again.

If the first coat of rusto is dry and on for a 12hr period, do you have to re sand before applying the second coat ?

I would sand it lightly just to be sure the second coat has something to grab. Then use tack cloth and paint again.
