A few years ago Dad bought a Yacht Club trailer to haul my brother's "new" 14' freebie boat on. The licence plate from Dad's other trailer was used to move it on the roads. Since then, he has lost track of the bill of sale and/or title and has forgotten who he bought it from.

Now I have the boat and want to licence the trailer in the near (or not so near) future. Does anyone know if I can find out the previous owner's identity from the state (there was no licence plate, but there is a model and serial #), or might I have to consider just calling it a home made trailer to licence it? If I do that, could I make a "correction" to the title/registration later?

You can proabably make up a bill of sale and have it notarized, this may do the trick. If not contact your local outlet for license tabs and see if they can have a duplicate title sent to your adress. Then you may have to do your best to track down previous owner and have him sign it, failing here you may be able to have the sheriffs dept assist you by vouching for you. on the bright side now we have the liftime tabs for trailers. Not sure but this would proably be a good place to start.

Re: Licensing trailer in MN

I just talked to DMV (county auditor) and it sounds like less trouble than I thought it would be. Their VIN search found nothing, but he said that I just have to fill out a "Statement of Fact" just like if I was doing a homemade trailer with the make, model, serial#, value, statement of the conditions (bought without registration, stored for so long, etc.), and then pay the sales tax, etc. So I guess I'm back in the game.
