i have a johnson 40 hp .ive read the other threads about the cylinders, but mine is just a little different. My cylinder still holds the motor up but it takes two people to lift it.Just wondering is cylinder bad or could it be a bad valve or something easy to fix.I checked the line and the lever is acctuating the cable. thank you

Re: lift cylinder

Im not really sure what you are talking about but, If you mean the trim/tilt, and it is power then you should not have to hold it up at all. If its not power then its just like a shock absorber and is not ment to hold it up.

Two things I can think of off hand. 1- the cable from the lever on stbd side may not be adjusted right or 2- you've got a bad tilt cyl. When they first came out, with the lever in the right position, you could raise it by yourself and then lock it in that position with the lever.

Re: lift cylinder

Just a warning about the tilt assist cylinder. It is not a user serviceable part. Trying to disassemble it can lead to serious injury because of the high tension that the spring is under inside the cylinder. If you loosen the top it will strip the last four threads and fly out of the cylinder shaft. Evinrude has a warning about this in the service manual. It is expensive to replace when mine went it was easier to buy a CMC Power trim and tilt system and install some springs to keep the motor from lifting when backing down.

Bigrockets is correct, Don't try to take that cylinder appart. Putting on the CMC is your best bet.
