Lift Strake advice for 28' Manitou

My wife and I just purchased our first pontoon about a month ago and now I would like to improve the ability of the barge to come onto plane or even just get the front of the logs up and out of the water. I have looked at the planing device that advertises on here but the price of almost 3G shipped I don't think it is in my budget. I think the next logical choice is lifting strakes, how long should they be on a 1994 28' Manitou Limited weighing in at 2200lbs w/o engine. The engine is a 1994 Evinrude 90hp V4. I am new to toons so any recomendations on width, length or any other info about strakes I may not even know about...yet. Recomendations on where to get this done in Northern Lower Michigan? How much ( ballpark) should I expect a job like this to cost?

You don't have a big enough motor for lifting strakes with a 28 foot pontoon

Really??? I can get 24mph out of it now with the logs plowing the entire way and the logs have bottom paint which is also dragging me back. I'm pretty sure if I had some lift I will have plenty of engine...I don't want to hit 100mph just get a better ride in the choppy water.

The 24mph is a gps reading from fishfinder and verified with speedview for my smart phone...both speeds coincided with each other.

I think Randy's point is you may not have enough power to get up onto the strakes. I'm inclined to agree, especially given the problem you're currently having. Have you tried contacting Manitou? They might have some particular insight.

I'm curious, funguy. Did you have some compelling reason for wanting a barge that big? I think I remember from one of your posts that you don't anticipate regularly having a large crew aboard. 28' is a lot of barge.

I don't know whether you will get up on strakes or not, with the weight and drag it will be tough, but don't expect a smoother ride in chop. When off the strakes my toons cut through the chop with little notice, but when at speed and up on the strakes the chop comes through very noticeably.

We wanted the room for the kids...we have 4 kids and they like to bring friends etc... I love the size of the barge and we got a smoking deal on it which helps. If I can't get it to plane no biggie because most of our motoring is just off idle anyhow.

I saw a couple of post on strakes. Are those angles welded on the side of the toons and giving the toons small wings? I have a 28 crest with 135hp is that enough.

I would put a 135 at least on it!

Understood. I realize I'm turning into a broken record, but please don't pursue any modifications like lifting strakes until you solve your original problem. Happy toonin'.

I have a 2011 22' with lifting strakes and a 115 4 stroke on it. with 4 adults and 4 labs(90lbs each) it will climb up on the strakes. Ran it this weekend with 7 adults and 5 dogs on it and it never came up on the strakes. The light load yielded 5900rpm at 29mph. the heavy load yielded 5200rpm and 19mph. I think you will lose speed when you can't get up on plane.
