I know you mentioned you adjusted the lifters as per specs, but what did you do specifically? Adjusting them without the engine running is called static adjustment, and it's the method I use myself. You do have to have a fine "touch" to tell when all the slack is removed from the pushrod however. To adjust them with the engine running can be messy, but is perhaps a little easier. You simply back the adjustment nut off one rocker at a time till it cletters and then tighten it up till the clatter stops - then add a little more turn. Do it with each rocker and you are done.
