Lifting a 115 engine?

Hello I got a yamaha 115 1986 115ETLJ. Well i have to hoist the engine to get the old steering out of the pivion because its froze inside the piviot. Well what i need to know is where do i strap the engine to lift it so that its ballanced. I have to pull the boat away from it a little so i can get room to hammer the old steering rod out. With the motor mounted the splashwell is keeping me from getting a good swing with the hammer. So where do i strap the motor to lift it. A quick reply would be greatly apreciated. Thanks so much guys i would never be a boater without everyone here helping me along the way!!!

If you know someone at your local dealership see if you couldn't borrow a lifting eye for a bit. If not then some nylon lifting straps would do the trick. But I'd be really tempted to remove the lower cowling first.

Get some chain, some longer manifold bolts( or where ever you need to hook up, front and rear, catty-cornered), and some big washers, and go for it.

Is this where a hook can support the motor???? I need to know. Please let me know. it will have to hold the motor overnite.

I've seen people bolt lifting eyes to the flywheel. That hook certainly looks hefty but I wouldn't want to hang it just by that overnight unless you've got one on the other side for balance.

Any way you can lower it to the ground and take some load off overnight?

That hook looks just like the one on my much smaller 60. Same place, pretty much same shape . I just used a treated shackle to get clear of the flywheel and hoisted it up. KR

I installed the flywheel puller without the center bolt, put a bolt through the center hole on the puller and bolted to a chain. Used this rig to pull a 200 hp evinrude and moved it to another boat and installed it. Worked real good.

I paid the $40.00 for the lifting ring from Mercury for my '67 650. Motor weighs about 185. I set it up and did some pull-ups on a bar through the ring before I tried the motor. Figured if it held me the motor would be no problem!

I paid the $40.00 for the lifting ring from Mercury for my '67 650. Motor weighs about 185. I set it up and did some pull-ups on a bar through the ring before I tried the motor. Figured if it held me the motor would be no problem!

I did the same then when pulling my 650 and then also bought the Bob's Machine Shop OMC lifting eye for putting the new Johnson 90 on. Some people here use a flywheel puller, as the fellow above mentioned. The only thing I have read consistently is to "make sure you use Grade 8 bolts".

To use the lifting ring, do you just remove the flywheel nut and thread the ring onto the end of the crankshaft?
