Lifting a large outboard

I'm sure this topic has been addressed previously, but I was unable to locate a post.<br />I am planning to replace the steering on my boat and ned to lift my 150 HP outboard to get the cables out. How involved is this. Besides needing a good hoist, what else should I have on hand before starting? Sealant/caulk? Replace or reuse the bolts? Any other tidbits of info from all the pros would be greatly apprecieated.<br />Thanks!

DrBob...if ya got the hoist and the 3/4" wrenches...then a little 3M 5200 should seal the bolt holes when you put the motor back on...real important to seal those mounting holes...just a Thought

Not sure what outboard you have, but mercury and probably other manufacturers make a ring that attaches to the flywheel to make it easy to lift your motor. Mercury wants $40 for one, although I made one myself for $2.

Personally I'd use new nuts and bolts, especially new nylon lock nuts if they are used. You also may want to use 4200 sealant instead of 5200. The 5200 may be too permanent to allow for removal later.

what is this 5200 and 4200 that you speak of? I assume it some type of epoxy?

3M 5200 is fine. I have mounted, removed, and remounted enough outboards with 5200 on the bolts, they came out with a bit of work, but the peace of mind is worth it. You can get a tube of 3M 5200 in the boat section of Wal-mart, very easy to find and use.

jheron,<br />5200 & 4200 is a sealant/caulk make by 3M.<br />Available in small & large tubes in boating stores.<br />5200 is also a fairly powerful adhesive.
