Lifting a motor

Is there a "hook" or other lifting device available to hoist an engine? Specifically, I want to hoist a 1985(?) Merc. 60 hp. There seems to be a large internal thread in the center of the flywheel that looks like it might accommodate such an animal, but without checking first, I don't want to screw anything up. If this is the way to go, is this a common thread (looks similar to a 1" IP thread, but haven't tried anything out yet. Or is this something I need to make? Or am I all wet behind the prop?

There is a Merc lifting eye that screws into the flywheel. Some on this forum have the thread specs. How high and why do you want to lift it? There are other ways.....

Since I posted, I have researched and found there is such an animal - now I have to try and find it.

I wonder where the thread specs might be found - I have a lathe and could possibly make one.

I want to lift it because I just bought a boat with a blown engine (1985 or so 60hp. 3 cyl Merc. with the top cylinder ruined) and will be replacing it with another (good) used Merc. I might try and salvage a few of the parts from the old engine (hydraulics, etc.) but for now just need to get it off and put the new one on without damaging anything.

I'm in Northern California, if you're anywhere near me I have one I'll give you. Just come and get it. I'm not building motors anymore and don't need it or the flywheel puller.

Re: Lifting a motor

That is not a real heavy motor. Grab a friend and lift it off. Or better yet, jack up the trailer tongue and have your friend grab it when it clears the transom. The two of you can drag it to the stand you built...
