I just bought an old boat that had a burned out light bulb. When I put a new one in it lit up then the wired behind it really started smoking. They werent bare or grounded. Any ideas. It was a front light. 12volt. Pontoon

Well, if the wires were not shorted when the circuit wasn't completed with the globe, and they did smoke when the globe was in.. then its either a very unusual globe issue, or the globe socket is damaged and puttin the globe in shorted it out.

Its also possible that the globe you put in, draws much more power then the wires are capable of supplying.

what type of light was it? how many watts??

what guage wire is used for the socket?

rgds

frank

I agree with Franki. A bulb that has a high wattage can cause this. If the bulb was burning the whole time then I doubt anything was shorted.
