Aside from the 'safety' issue of a pilot light vs an electronic igniter there is a definite cost benefit to an electronic vs a pilot always burning fuel. In around the early 80's it was figured a pilot light used roughly $8 fuel each month, multiply that by the number of pilots in the home it added up quickly. Many old gas ranges had at least two pilots just for the burners and another one for the oven/broiler, so the stove alone could add $24 to the monthly gas bill, add a hot water heater and furnace and you quickly start to figure the pay-back period for installing electronic igniters in everything.

Most water heaters still have standing pilot lights. The heat for a water heater pilot light isn't being wasted really since it is keeping the water hot in the water heater.

Maybe you are confused with all new water heaters that have enclosed burner chambers that require a push button electric ignition to light the standing pilot light.

The chamber is enclosed from the front but there is a vent in the bottom of the unit that allows combustion air in. They also become covered in dust bunnies very easily resulting in a $75 service call so the tech can reach under and say,: yep she`s plugged up" :facepalm::facepalm: Doh

Its just funny that someone asks how to light a hw heater and then it devolves into water heater theory, and themocouples and pilot generators and standing pilots...

Follow the instructions on the front of it(Depending on age) is an acceptable answer to the op's question also...

PS I'm not taking a side or saying anyone is wrong or disagreeing with anyone...threads like these are just "Interesting"

Yep, they are a pain in the butt. I clean the vents on both of the ones I installed at my rental houses all the time.
