Lightning during snow?

I live in north Alabama and we are snowed in today with 8 inches at my house with surrounding areas up to a foot .. That pretty much shuts us down for several days. But last night around 11pm it lightened and thundered several times while it was coming down hard. I'm 43 years old and I have never seen that happen in my life.. It actually freaked me out for a minute. Is this a normal occurrence during a snow storm? I actually had to shovel snow off of my porch steps and a path to my truck. Another first LOL. Thanks goodness for sawdust scoops.

Here in NW Montana, we usually have it happen a couple of times a year, pretty common event for us..

GREAT!
That storm is heading our way in NC!

I have seen all kinds of crazy weather when I lived up north on the coast.
Cold air meets warm air and produced hail, lightening, then snow changing to rain...but that was usually in the spring!

Haven't seen it down here....yet!

We started with sleet and it completely covered the ground, Then the snow came and it was coming down hard. This morning we were getting frozen rain or freezing mist. The snow has a hard crust on the bottom and top.. it's like a snow sandwich. LOL...

I have seen lightning with snowstorms.....weather changes so much up here I`ve seen all 4 seasons in 1 day. This past December has been warmest since records kept. We are now starting to get a bit of winter.

Saw it occasionally when I lived in North East Ohio. It was really cool when it happened at night.

Yep, once in a great while we'll get it here in Minnesota. I think they refer to it as 'thunder snow'

Re: Lightning during snow?

When I was a kid, lightning hit the tall chimney of the local Catholic Church and started a fire during a snow squall in January. The Fire department was slow to respond because the dispatcher didn't believe the child that called it in. He had to go get the priest to call it in.

Thundersnow is freaky, especially if it's close enough to see it.

Yup, thundersnow. We get it here from time to time.

I kind of like it. Makes it sound like summer.

I seen it a few times here in Michigan, Usually a very wet heavy snow and comes downs very fast, not like the light and fluffy lake effect snow like the 12" we got last Friday.

Yes, when that cold air meets the warm air, things are going to happen.

Ever seen sun dogs, that wild as well.

Weird, we've had one of the coldest winters in NC history.
It was the first snow on Christmas since 1947!

Yeah we call it Thunder Snow here in Colorado also, this past year we had a storm that produced rain then a small tornado then thunder snow leaving behind a couple inches on the grassy areas, all in a couple hours, they were talking about it the whole week!

Hey Dooma, what part of N. Al ? I'm in Central Al, Coosa County. We didn't get your amount of fun here, but a 1/4" of ice is plenty for me ;)

I've seen lightning once, I think it was the storm of 2003. Very glad that it is not a frequent occurance here.

Stay safe, and warm!

I live in a Arab, small town about 25 miles south of Huntsville. Not so much ice here except some this morning that put a nice crust on top of what we got.
