rebuilding carb on '64 3hp evinrude lightwin model #3402r
ser#C405416. The carb kit came with gaskets etc. When I dismanteled the carb the manual shows a high speed needle on the bottom of this thing. In mine there is a screwin bolt (flat end, not brass, but steel and does not go all the way into the carb., but no needle on the end). The high speed port is clean as air blows right through. Is there supposed to be a needle in here, and if so does anyone know if you can purchase just the needle.

Hey Bean,
Where the flat screw is, right behind it is a fixed hi speed jet. This jet will screw out with a small screw driver, make sure it's clean. I don't think that you will need an adjustable screw jet on your engine.
Good luck.

Re: lightwin 3hp carb

got the thing back together. Runs like a charm at full and at half throttle...can even push the choke in now :) only problem now is below half throttle it seems to slow and die. I started with the slow speed turned out at 1 1/2 turns and increased from there, but does not seem to make any difference. The jets are clear as i've had it apart twice (first time still had initial choke problem)and cleaned it. air blows right through, no blockages. BTW I put in new plugs gapped at .30, gas flow is good. any one have any other ideas I should look at?
Thanks, Bean

Hi again Bean,
Did you blow carb cleaner through the small tube and watch it come out of the small openings behind the throttle plates? Thats the low speed openings. I think that you have a low speed needle that you can rwmove and blow carb cleaner through there.
Have fun

Re: lightwin 3hp carb

Hi Bean. I have a 1968 3hp lightwin and it has the low and high speed adjusting needles. The low speed adjustment on my motor is pretty touchy, but when I get it just right the motor will sit there and tick over like a watch. Warm it up good and try turning the low adjustment in from the original 1 1/2 turns a little at a time and keep the throttle open enough where the engine won't stall while you're doing this. The other thing I would do is make sure your points are clean and adjusted properly, and replace the condensers so you'll be sure of a good spark. Best of luck.
