Limewire Users - Opinions Please

Santa brought my wife a new ipod for Christmas. Some tell me that they like limewire.com but they always say you have to be careful - of what I'm not real sure.

Any users have opinions, cautions, or insight about the use of the limewire site?

It's not like the old Napster where others access your music files in exchange for your being able to access theirs is it?

What else should we know about it?

Thanks.

Limewire is a virus waiting to happen!
I have worked on at least five peoples computers in the last few months that were loaded with viruses...all of them had been using peer to peer file share programs.Limewire was on 3 of them.
I had used it myself until about a year ago when my pc crashed.
I re-format and re-install operating system. Then ended up buying a new hard drive. That was the only way i got it back to normal.

The safe way would be to suscribe to itunes...that way you get clean downloads

I use limewire for unusual older music I can't find easily. I have never had a problem, but I know some who have so it is a risk. You might check out www.emusic.com. You get 25 downloads for signing up and then 30/mo. for $10. I have some friends that use it. You don't get the selection you get with Itunes, but there is a lot. You can search their list before subscribing to see if they have anything you want. The biggest reason for me is that emusic downloads come without DRM (digital rights management) and can be transported where ever you wish as often as you wish. Itunes has DRM imbedded. I have issues with DRM and the lack of real ownership it implies. Another thing is that Emusic keeps a running tab of what you have purchased and if you lose your copy you can log in and just redownload it for free. A buddy lost his IPOD and was able to simply recover all his music easily. Emusic also gives you the ability to see what others who have downloaded what you downloaded are listening to. If you are looking for new music that is a neat feature. Just so you know I am not an Emusic shill, just a guy looking to find great music.

i use limewire, but run virus programs continuously

i got limewire first, then i downloaded limewire pro from lime wire. much faster

just do not share and u are OK
also look at the file sizes also, that make a huge difference of a bad file or not

never had a problem with them for 5 years so u will be OK as long as u run a virus program on the files first

Limewire is extremely risky. I would only use it on a seperate old computer. Try WinMX, there is NO spyware of any kind and there never has been. Also a very good selection.

When i used Limewire i had all the latest Norton Corperate anti-virus software.Thought i was protected but WRONG!!! Anything you are downloading from others unknown computers is a big risk.

I have used Limewire to get old songs (1970's. Convoy. love that song8) ) but deleted them after I had burned them, and uninstalled the program.

I appreciate the responses. We've been using itunes but "free" sounds great. At the same time I'm still paying for losing my wife's favorite places when I had to reformat the computer the last time so I'm not feeling particularly brave at the moment.

Thanks again.

Have used

Limewire
Kazaa
emule

Kazaa is by far the worst followed by Limewire.

NEVER had a problem with emule safe as houses. I am told the lastest download is no longer free but the version just prior to that (the one I have is).

The problem with not sharing is that you then get low priority on downloads as the system senses your "selfishness". It see you wanting everything without being willing to offer anything.

Withemule you can share only you media directory keeping the rest of your system safe

Songs seem to be safe. Depending on your antivirus software, most virus is caught on the way in, but double-check before playing. ALWAYS double-check anything that comes in zipped as soon as you unzip it. Much adult content comes in and it isn't always labeled as such. Kiddie porn is a clear and present danger. You can download programs...including Limewire Pro. Movies, music videos, images, documents. It's Napster Plus. I hear you can only get prosecuted for distributing, not for downloading. You can turn the outgoing option off. Antispyware software is free on the net. I use Spybot Search And Destroy (freeware). Haven't gotten any spyware off Limewire, but plenty from websites.
