line-x vs Rhino

Just bought a 2008 GMC Sierra and need a bedliner. I'm thinking of going with a spray on. Anyone have any opinions about either Line-x or Rhino. There are only 3 Rhino dealers in my area. The closest one is 26 miles. Line-x dealers are all over the place around me. I'll probably choose Line-x by defalut. Anyone have any problems with Line-x?

Thanks in advance.

Re: line-x vs Rhino

I use my dad's truck a lot which has Rhino and a truck I just sold had a Line-X copy. I prefer the line-x because I don't like how the Rhino is so soft and things don't slide well across it without catching. What is a disadvantage to me may be an advantage to you though. Neither one of my beds was exposed to sun so I can't comment on longevity.

With the line-x install, all access plates are removed and sprayed separate. On the Rhino they are left in place. I don't believe you can spray the rhino on these separate because of the nature of the material. I think it is a huge advantage to be able to take off access plates without damaging the liner. May want to verify this with the Rhino dealer though.

I plan on putting a roll up cover on it so weather exposure will be limited. My main concern is that I don't like the look of my bed being all scratched up. I've done the drop in kind before but they all eventually crack and every thing slides on them also.

The drop in ones will also rust out your bed. The spray in liners are the best.

Walmart has a DIY kit that you can use. I have a buddy who used it about a year ago and it is holding up real nice and he "uses" his truck hard.

Walmart has more than one kit. They carry Duplicolor, Pastikote, and Herculiner. The first two aren't very good as far as durability goes. However, the Herculiner is great. I used it on my fiberglass Jeep hard top. I applied it with a roller and even a brush in small areas. It left no tracks and looks as if it were sprayed on. It is as tough as iron. A gallon of Herc is 79 bucks at Walmart. A gallon will give you two coats on a 6ft bed. Personally, I would buy two gallons and put on 3-4 coats.

There is a possible downside to any spray on bedliner.....I have a drop in bedliner in my pickup. A couple of years ago, I took it out to clean under it. I saw a brown spot on the near flawless paint and knew what it was....rust. I took a screwdriver and poked thru the bed. By the time I ground it out, I had a 2" x 3" hole. The bed is three pieces and is sealed at the seams by a caulk-like seam sealer. The sealer had came off on the bottom and was letting water from the bottom of the bed get between the overlap on the panels. If I had had a spray in liner, I would not have discovered the rust until it was so bad that the bed fell thru when you put weight on the spot.

I live in California it is very hard for regular people to get any type of solvent based product. So I don't know if the DIY kits out here are water based all the garage floor coatings are water based. I'll go to Wally World and see what they have. As far as finding the rust faster with a drop in I don't know. I put mine in my Ranger in 1993 and never saw the bottom of the bed. Rust is not a concern out here unless you drive in the Ocean.

Problem is that the bed liner rubs on the bed, wears the paint down to the bare metal and traps any water between the bedliner and the bed. I live is So Cal too and have seen rusted out beds from these.

I bought a giant rubber mat that is cut to fit the full bed, it has done really well and was only about 150 dollars

I did the rubber mat thing. I believe it's still some where on the side of I-10. I had a drop in for my ranger a I needed to screw the rear floor area because it whould lift up at highway speeds.

Re: line-x vs Rhino

line-x is hard and tough, Rhino is softer but holds up pretty well. Rhino does colors, line-x might not sure. If you go into line-x they give you a little 1"x1" sample, check it out.

Dual liner makes a rubber mat bottom with plastic sides that snap in. Neat product. The nice thing about this one is it's removeable and cheaper.

I used Herculiner to paint the racks on my ATV and it's holding up well. It's not as nice as line-x but only cost about $20. The prep work is extremely important and takes some time.

In 2006 I bought a new GMC Canyon with a line-x look-alike liner. I carry everything from sand and gravel to trash. The truck stays out in the weather year round including several feet of snow during the winter, and the liner still looks like it did when new. ;)
