Hello,

I have just replaced my transom, stringers, including engine mounts and floor. Plan on installing the engine soon. Anyone have any tips on how to align the engine and outdrive? I know I will need to adjust the engine height because of the new mounts.

Also I heard that the leg takes engine oil not gear oil. Is that really the best oil to use, or should I use a synthetic gear oil? Have never used engine oil in a gearbox before.

Thanx for your help and have a great day.

Rob.

There are three tabs on the flywheel housing and the transom shield. One on each side (one shown in pic) and one on the top.
Use the alignment tool to get the engine equal on all three within specs.

And yes, your drive uses motor oil. Straight 30W oil is best. Don't try to over engineer the gear lube specs. Keep it changed yearly (or 100hrs) and your drive should last for many years.

Thanx Don,

With that wedge you are basically making sure the gap is the same at all three tabs. Sounds easy enough in theory. I will install the transom shield to engine bolts, tighten them incrementally and adjust the engine height as I tighten them, to make sure they are lined up. Seloc manual does not contain this type of info. Should have bought an OEM manual. Will use 30W oil for the drive.

Thanx again for your help.

Have a great day.

That's it, nothing fancy

Been trying to explain that to people for years.

I was thinking of re-using the two large O rings that go onto the bell housing, they look OK, should I use some type of sealant on them? I normally do not like to re-use an O ring, but these ones look like they are expensive because they are so big. Also do you recommend using any sealant when installing the bellows?

Thanx again Don for all your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Have a great day,

Rob.

As long as those rings aren't real flattened out from use, they should be ok. Once I put them on the bellhousing or the clamp ring I put a little grease on the seal so it slides into the transom shield a little easier without pulling them off the bellhousing.
Adhesive isn't necessary on the bellows, do make sure the UP on the bellows is actually up and make sure the clamps are in the correct position.
