lining up old merc inline 4 lowers

Does anyone know the combination for lining up the lower units in the old inline 4 cylinder mercs from the late 50's early 60's or proper procedure?

I got it in once but then the reverse lock didn't work. Tried again and it wouldn't shift(lol). Third time in shifted into reverse but then I couldn't hit neutral.

Thank you, thank you, thank you so very much. I spent 4 hours messin around with that thing tring to get it to work and then the gears shifted backwards LOL. I'll add this page to my manual. Thank you again, Jeff
