So, I've been reading tons of posts on these forums and I still don't understand what a "link & sync" all entails doing. Can someone please explain clearly?

Secondly, in regards to the "link & sync" procedure for every motor it seems many recommend a manual. So, do you need the factory manual (which is a bit expensive) or do the Seloc manuals cover this procedure?

If it helps I'm referring to my (not sure exact year) 1977-79 40 HP Mercury 402 Outboard motor. Appreciate any help. Thanks. :)

Re: Link & Sync Questions

If you are not sure what engine you have, you don't know what the procedure is and you don't know what manual you need. Yes, you need a manual. Yes the factory manual is expensive but it is also the best. You are never assured Seloc or Clymer tells the full story. The procedure is detailed and must be followed to the letter. It is far too detailed to go into here. What is does is synchronizes ignition advance with throttle opening. If you look at the linkage on your engine you will see there is no direct connection to the throttles on the carbs. They operate through cams and linkages to the bellcranks and to the timing advance plate. There are very specific settings that need to take place at specific points in the process. Do it without a manual and it will guarantee a poor running engine.
