Could be alot of things.

Get an OEM manual it covers your engine only nothing else, if ti is i the manual it is for you motor, worht every penny.

Get one here at iboats or try Ebay if you are on a tight budget.

Almost sounds like a dirty carb(s)

Welcome to iboats.

I agree with above ^^^ get yourself a factory OEM Service Manual. It WILL pay for itself a million times over.

Sounds like you have a couple problems here. First off, the starting issue. Either your battery is faulty (take it into a Canadian Tire and have them load test it for you, its free), OR there is a faulty section of wiring OR a bad connection. This includes at the battery, starter, solenoid, and engine ground. Take them all off, file them up, then re tighten. Look for faulty sections of wiring. Any wiring with nicks, cuts, abrasions will need to be replaced. "Crunching" when you flex it is also a sure sign of inner corrosion. Voltage drop testing is a quick and easy way to find a faulty segment of wiring, or faulty component. Let us know if you need help with this.

Regarding the idle, may be a couple things. Is it set to 650 to 750 RPM under load and in gear? Will spraying pre mixed fuel into the carb throats pick it back up? Choking it? Pumping the fuel primer bulb? Possible you need a carb bath/rebuild then link n sync. See the FAQ for a thread by Tashasdaddy regarding this.

hey hightrim

i am trying to get motor working to fish the french river this weekend. i found one problem with my crankshaft key. it was worn out , replaced that today, tried starting it it started but starter keeps jamming on flywheel , thats where i am right now , looking at my starter,,,thanks for the info so far. p.s. i have the clymer book but my engine seems to be a mix of the '76 and 77 yrs, mechanically it fits the 76 stuff to look for but electrically it follows the 77 model

What is the battery voltage when off? Then what is the battery voltage at the starter while attempting to crank? Im still willing to bet that your problem will lie in the battery, OR wiring/connections from the battery to solenoid to starter.

Also be sure to remove the main ground from the engine block, shine it up, then re tighten. This is another suspect area.

Used to love going muskie fishing on the French.

hey hightrim , got most of my problems solved, it starts a little rough after its been going for awhile but for now going to keep it that way, i got a huge project with the floor right now rotted wood and all, should have it up and ready for long weekend , heading to nippissing lake for the fish there, after that might put it away for the winter then do some spring work on it. decided to go with a new 115 hp evinrude next fall to eliminate motor woes from this year too but keeping the boat i like trihulls...i will update my hopeful successes when i get back..later and thanks
